2016 World Cup : Grand Masters Day 8

The penultimate day of the 2016 World Cup saw all 3 Welsh sides playing. The O70s played Australia O75s (the day before their Bronze medal match with Japan) which Australia ran out 4-0 winnersn but more importantly, Wales avoided injuries.

The O60s re-found their touch to beat Malaysia 4-0 with 3 goals from Zahid Arain and 1 from Malcolm Woodward. Final standings are not published yet but this was an excellent result to lift their spirits after the Australia and Ireland set-backs.

The O65s had to beat Japan and take 5th place which would have been an improvement of one on their final ranking in The Hague. Japan were a fast and skilful side whilst on the ball but relied on the long ball for penetration. Wales' tactics were designed to nullify this and succeeded with few scares in the first half. However Wales themselves were unable to sustain pressure and Japan's goalkeeper was up to the few open play shots Wales managed. As the match wore on into the final quarter, Japan's attacks became more sustained and Wales goalkeeper Barry Sewell made a number of excellent saves to keep Wales in the game. However with only 6 minutes to go Japan scored following some indecisive clearances and time and energy ran out for Wales. Although they had a penalty corner shot disallowed from the final move of the game, a draw in any case would not have been enough for 5th place.

So all eyes are on the O70s at 9.15 on Thursday morning.
